Victoria's Selective Entry High Schools: frequently asked
What year do you sit the Victorian selective exam?
The exam is sat in Year 8 for entry into Year 9. This is different from NSW, where the Selective test is sat in Year 6 for Year 7 entry — the most common point of confusion for families moving to Victoria.
How many selective entry high schools does Victoria have?
Four fully selective entry high schools: Melbourne High School, Mac.Robertson Girls' High School, Nossal High School and Suzanne Cory High School. You can rank up to four schools in one application.
Who runs the Victorian selective entry exam?
The exam is administered by ACER® on behalf of the Victorian Department of Education. Applications and the sitting are centralised — one exam covers all four schools.
How competitive is it?
Around 3,000–4,000 students typically apply for roughly 800 places. A cap also applies: no more than 4% of any single school's Year 8 cohort may receive offers.
Is there fee support?
Families holding an eligible concession card can receive a 50% reduction on the application fee. Confirm current details with the Victorian Department of Education.
